New Zealand Best in World for Business
Enjoy the headstart - New Zealand has just topped the World Bank’s survey of the best countries in the world in which to do business.

Doing Business in 2006 measures country performance in seven sets of business indicators. At the top of the World Bank’s ease-of-doing-business list is – you guessed it – New Zealand, ranking higher than Singapore and the U.S. in second and third places.

New Zealand also tops the lists for protecting investors and registering property, comes second in dealing with licenses, and fourth for hiring and firing. In fact, New Zealand ’s worst performance is 21st, where we rate on the list for closing a business!

Buried in all that is another ranking: New Zealand is the fourth best place in the world to start a business, behind Canada, Australia and the U.S. The rating comes not only because it takes a relatively short period of time to register a business, but also because of the support available to entrepreneurs.

And that’s where The Biz Centre comes in. This month we have another fantastic line-up of courses, designed to support you and your business and to help you be the very best you can be. We’re always interested in your feedback, too, so please let us know if there are any topics you would like to see covered or areas in which we can improve.

Legal Issues Workshop
Employing staff can be complicated and confusing - how do you know if the person you want to work for you should be hired as an employee or as an independent contractor? Does it really matter anyway? What has to be written down about the terms of work? What holidays will the person be entitled to and what will this cost the business? What happens if you get any of this wrong?

This seminar will bring you up to speed with the legal requirements when employing employees and independent contractors. It’s designed for those who are new in business and who want to take on staff.

The seminar will be presented by Penelope Ryder-Lewis, a partner in Wellington specialist workplace law firm Bartlett Partners. Penelope has a workplace law column in The Dominion Post and is a regular presenter in workplace law seminars for the Wellington Chamber of Commerce.

Tuesday 8th and repeated on Tuesday 15th November, 9.30am-11.30am

Business Journey

Developing and running a business is like being on a journey. And like any journey, it will include ups and downs, highs and lows, achievements and disappointments.

When going on a trip, you need to plan carefully who is going to accompany you, and identify the equipment and materials you need. You also need to travel in robust, multi-terrain vehicles. You’ll find your business journey is no different.

This pair of workshops will look first at the fuel and supplies you need to give your journey every chance of continuing success. We’ll then look at ways of charting your trip to ensure you go in the direction you want and reach your desired destination.

Thursday 17th November and Thursday 24th November, 5.30pm-8.30pm, at Business Porirua, 20 Parumoana Street (Wellington Beds Building), Porirua.

Contact Libby on (04) 237 5590 to book your place.

Marketing - PR and the Media

Press releases are different from normal advertising. The biggest distinction between the two is that publicity generated by the media from a press release is free and therefore more credible, impacting on the reader/listener/viewer more significantly than an advertisement.

A press release is a great way of generating free publicity but its message must be clear and interesting to the target audience - editors and reporters. When written and designed effectively, press releases can help you increase your sales, give your business greater public exposure and enhance your reputation and image.

This workshop looks at how to craft your press releases and determine who to send them to.

Thursday 3rd, 5.30pm-8.30pm, at Business Porirua, 5.30pm-8.30pm, 20 Parumoana Street (Wellington Beds Building), Porirua.

Contact Libby on (04) 237 5590 to book your place.
